Preventive Maintenance for the Belts and Hoses on Your Vehicle

Just like your vehicle needs periodic oil changes, tire rotations, and topping off of fluids, there are various belts and hoses on your vehicle that must be inspected and maintained. With routine wear and tear, things like your timing belt and serpentine belt can fail. Here are some maintenance tips to remember for belts and hoses:

  • Use your hands to inspect the serpentine belt. You may notice small frays on the outside edges of the belt.
  • You want to make sure that the belts are at the proper tension level. Anything that is loose or sagging is in need of repair.
  • Hoses usually wear out from the inside out. The hose should feel firm when you touch it. Anything that is spongy is wearing out.
  • Keep an eye out for leaks. They could be coming from a very minor slit in the hose.
